The England national team will initiate their 2028 European Championship journey at the Etihad Stadium, provided that they achieve the relatively straightforward qualification for a tournament taking place in the majority of the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
City’s stadium has not welcomed an England men’s game since eight years ago, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to host the England side for their inaugural game on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The English side are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning Group B, their knockout stage opener would occur at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s ground.
The championship was launched at an gathering in central London on Wednesday evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the host FAs were confronted as they entered the venue by about 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who demanded the Israeli team to be kicked out from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Signs were displayed with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
The first match of the tournament will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a game that will include Wales if they make it.
Wembley Stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the title decider, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at 5:00 PM.
It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be adopted for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to households and help engage a wider spectrum of audiences.
The Ireland are scheduled to play their first game at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will enter the qualification process; two automatic spots will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the qualification path.
Aston Villa’s stadium and The North London arena round out the event’s nine venues. All will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals played at every host’s main arena.
The qualification draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was removed as a venue city last year when it became clear the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
“This will be a championship for the fans and a celebration of everything we love about the game – its passion and power to bring people together.”
Over 3 million tickets, a unprecedented number for a Euro tournament, are projected to be offered to attendees.
