The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

Considering the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.

“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
