The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Total Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five starts.

When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a crucial Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

This talent is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may represent different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented following the win at Manchester.
