The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated series by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
