The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came recently.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
