The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive game where a girl containing several personalities within her must escape from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.

A World of Individual Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The central gameplay loop involves managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
