The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A freshly coined acronym emerged several months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, per insights from health professionals including paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for physicians to attend to a minor who has lost their complete family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that violations are ongoing. Authorities rejects these allegations, just as it disavows everything it is accused of. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, it seems, is what global togetherness resembles.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision turns 70 next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. An institution that initially championed togetherness has devolved into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
