Each time a significant honors show approaches, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
