A popular South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation struggling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the city centre on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the forty-year-old presenter was confronted by three individuals, with one shot at him before fleeing on foot.
The reason behind the incident is unknown and no one has been arrested are in custody, police said.
Authorities said that Stock was ambushed as he was leaving a premises in the vicinity of the city center landmark.
He had devoted time at the property managing the installation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, according to reports.
"It is alleged the man was confronted by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before fleeing the scene on foot," authorities stated.
CCTV footage reportedly depicted a individual with dreadlocks and clad in what looked like a protective services outfit firing shots on Stock before making his escape.
The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.
Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the incident.
Key evidence, like spent shells, were recovered from the location.
Police have appealed members of the public who may have seen the suspects to contact them.
"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the attack, and officers have been following their trail to establish their destination," stated a police chief.
His family member, a close relative, stated the loved ones are reeling to process his death.
"Words fail me. I am shattered," she stated.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about topics not many people were willing to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."
She urged the public to avoid sharing explicit content from the scene, explaining this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's three sons.
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that premiered on a South African TV network.
In addition to his work in broadcasting, Stock was active in various commercial activities, including security provision, offering elite guarding services and protecting high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also understood to participate in property management and participated in property reclaimations.
His death has caused national trauma and triggered an flood of condolences from his followers, the authorities and various organizations.
A government minister remarked he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's murder.
"He spoke his truth without fear or favour. He even challenged me and my policies as a minister. He was a shining model of who we ought to be," the minister added.
A party figurehead stated the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a trauma for all South Africans".
A media executive noted that "Stock was not merely a TV personality. He was a skilled narrator, a true devotee of sound and a warm soul who brought happiness and vitality to every moment on screen. His artistic passion left an indefinable mark."
In a release, the network he worked for declared Stock was known for his presence, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his memory "will be remembered".
