Putin as a Russian 007? The New Film's Depiction of Vladimir Putin Appears to Reinforce Official Russian Myths

Last year, star Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, however, could coincide too neatly with the mythologized version circulated by official channels that, within Russia, it reads as a endorsement rather than a challenge.

The Manufactured Superhero

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have collaborated to craft a made-to-measure persona of Putin. This character is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, a former spy reimagined as a local 007 who always knows beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a television show launched last fall, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “save” the nation from disorder. Although the character's name a different name, the message is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals frequently result in buttressing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. An adaptation based on a popular book sets out to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him as a symptom but as a consequence, moving the narrative weight to the spin doctors around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, Putin is shown as having been picked by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to take the top job. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking enduring influence.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged him to accept the role. The position was in essence a selection process with many candidates. Central to this process stood an influential oligarch from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the state in practice.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” may in part have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s arrival as 007. The grittier version led local outlets and online audiences to make comparisons with their leader. Edited images swapping Craig’s face with his appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the growing tendency to see him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

With Jude Law, an star well-liked by viewers there, the Kremlin are likely to seize the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's exclusion of public dissent, the opposition, or key figures in the story, even though it includes the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.
