There are "no plans" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has declared.
Recently the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the war in Ukraine.
A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House said the two had had a "positive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "necessary".
The administration withheld further information on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.
The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Various sources claimed his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with sources indicating Trump had pushed him to cede extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Moscow.
Nevertheless, on Monday Trump embraced a peace initiative endorsed by Ukraine and European leaders to pause the war on the existing battle lines.
"Leave it as is the way it is," he remarked.
Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the present battle positions.
The Russian government was only interested in "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister said on Tuesday, indicating that halting hostilities would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.
The "underlying reasons" of the conflict demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of maximalist demands that encompass the recognition of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.
The Ukrainian president stated talks regarding the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.
He further commented the only topic that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to Ukraine.
The Russian president's unplanned conversation with Trump recently preceded rumors that the United States was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit inside Russia.
The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the missiles had proven to be a "significant input" in international relations", he added.
