New Year's Partygoers Told to Wrap Up Warm with Wintry Weather Forecast Across the UK

Forecasters have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with snow likely across much of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Go Ahead Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to take place, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," noted the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Open but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are forecast to be low, meaning additional clothing essential, according to forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Weather Alerts for Friday

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Alerts Released

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this meant the weather was expected to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
