Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Gunbattle at Nigerian School

Security breach at learning center
Schools in northern Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for armed groups

Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.

The armed faction invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.

The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their hostel, authorities disclosed.

A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.

Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the armed men then led a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.

In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The incident in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.

Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has intensified significantly in the last several months, with learning centers bearing the brunt of the unrest.
