Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
