Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution

Democratic officials voiced anger after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and stated they should be taken into custody and penalized "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Message That Sparked the Debate

The clip, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who in the past acted in defense or intelligence roles.

"Like us, you all swore an vow to protect and defend this founding document," the representatives declared in the brief video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document don't only come from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can decline improper directives, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that contravene the legal system or our national charter."

Trump's Incensed Response

The recorded statement seemed to trigger a angry reaction from the ex-president.

On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional publication, he declared: "This constitutes really serious, and Dangerous to our Country. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials Respond

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader released a joint statement denouncing the comments.

"Violent politics has no place in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all acted our United States with great patriotism and honor. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and appeal to House Republicans to strongly do the same."

The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to guarantee the security of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical digital publications and recant his violent discourse before he leads to violence," the statement continued.

Representatives' Strong Reaction

The officials who appeared in the video also issued a response.

"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who love this United States and swore an oath to safeguard and support the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we aim to honor it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred duty."

"The significant point is that the president deems it punishable by execution for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the constitution and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."

They continued: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the ex-president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a period for moral clarity."

Further Political Comments

The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is requesting the death of elected officials."

He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should denounce this without delay and without qualification."

The Republican House speaker justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the government telling soldiers to defy commands, I think that is without precedent in American history."

The GOP official also reportedly informed journalists that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the terminology and establish all that."

White House Reaction

During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the president is addressing," the official stated. "You have active officials of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a recorded statement to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to defy the executive's lawful orders."

She added: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the chain of command, and if that structure is violated, it can cause fatalities, it can cause chaos, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are essentially promoting."
