A speeding vehicle that was fleeing police slammed into a busy bar in the early hours on Saturday, killing 4 people and wounding 11 in a historic neighborhood of Tampa, known for its nightlife and tourists.
Aerial patrol team with the Tampa police department spotted the vehicle operating recklessly on a highway at about 12.40am after police stated the light-colored car had been observed illegally racing in a different area, as per a police department announcement.
The Florida highway patrol intercepted the car and attempted to execute a maneuver that entails bumping a back panel of a escaping vehicle to make it to spin out, called a precision immobilization technique, but it was unsuccessful.
Highway patrol officers “ended pursuit” as the car sped toward the historic downtown district near downtown, local police reported. Eventually, the driver failed to maintain control of the car and hit more than a dozen people outside the bar, police said.
3 individuals perished at the location and a fourth person died at a medical facility. As of Saturday morning, a fifth victim was hospitalized in serious condition, and eight other patients were being treated at local hospitals but were classified as not critical, police said. 2 other victims sustained slight injuries and refused medical aid at the scene. All 15 victims are adults.
“What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy, our hearts are with the loved ones of the deceased and everyone who were affected,” the local police chief said in a statement.
Officers named the alleged driver as 22-year Silas Sampson, who was arrested on the weekend and is being detained at the Hillsborough county jail.
Legal records showed Sampson has been charged with 4 charges of reckless driving causing death and four counts of aggravated fleeing or eluding with severe harm or fatality. Each are first-degree crimes. No attorney was listed for Sampson.
“The community feels the tragedy,” remarked the city’s leader, who also was the city’s first female top cop, in a post on online platforms.
“Our condolences are with everyone affected. The investigation into the incident is continuing, and efforts are underway to obtain explanations,” she wrote.
Lately, some states and municipal authorities have advocated to restrict the employment of high-speed car chases to safeguard both civilians and police. After a increase in deaths, a 2023 report supported by the US justice department called for police chases to be minimized, explaining that the danger to suspects, officers and onlookers often exceeds the urgent requirement to take someone into custody.
Still, the state has doubled down on the methods, with the state’s highway patrol amending its guidelines to loosen restrictions on the use of car chases and pit maneuvers. The federally supported report described those strategies as “high-risk” and “controversial”.
